Leading Edge placed into administration

Buying group throws in the towel reportedly owing millions.
Buying group Leading Edge has been placed into administration, with suppliers notified by letter yesterday.
“After careful consideration, the board has resolved to appoint a voluntary administrator to the company. This decision follows many months of exploring every realistic option to strengthen the financial position of the Australian business,”
Leading Edge Group chairman, Peter Knock said in a letter to members.
Leading Edge Group has hundreds of independent computer, electronics, and appliance store members, many of them in regional areas. The NSW-based group is believed to owe millions, despite many suppliers having already placed the group on credit hold.
“Over recent years, the Australian retail sector has experienced one of the most prolonged and challenging trading environments in decades. Rising interest rates, persistent cost-of-living pressures, reduced consumer discretionary spending, escalating operating costs and intense competition from large national chains and online retailers have placed significant pressure on independent businesses across the country,” Knock said.
“Many of our members have seen trading volumes decline, reduced their participation in buying group programs as they sought to preserve cash, or, in some cases, made the difficult decision to close their businesses altogether. These broader market conditions have had a direct impact on Leading Edge Group’s revenue base and financial performance, despite the continued loyalty and commitment of our members, suppliers and employees,” he added.
“The appointment of an administrator does not automatically mean the business will cease operating. One of the administrator’s first responsibilities will be to assess the company’s affairs and determine the course of action that delivers the best outcome for creditors and stakeholders,” Knock said.
The central billing model is the key to the fallout, according to David Richards, editorial director at ChannelNews.
“Under the model, members order direct from suppliers, suppliers invoice Leading Edge, and Leading Edge pays suppliers and issues members one consolidated monthly bill. That makes Leading Edge the counterparty on both sides, meaning administration freezes the whole payment chain, claim insiders,” Richards reported.
