Staples expands beyond office supplies

New strategy focuses on a services-led model.
Staples, the leading US bricks-and-mortar office-supply retailer, is turning its 900-store network into a community services hub by moving beyond traditional office supplies to combat a shrinking retail market and intense competition.
The strategy focuses on a services-led model with expanded offerings such as print services, UPS shipping, and online returns.
The company is also integrating shop-in-shops, including Party City in 700 stores and a Stanton Optical pilot in Philadelphia, to attract both small businesses and everyday shoppers.
With nearly four million American high school students expected to graduate in 2026 and graduation-related spending exceeding US$6.8 billion last year, the demand for convenient, one-stop celebration solutions continues to grow.
Staples also offers 'Bins Wins',selling discounted returned merchandise to create a unique treasure-hunt experience, further differentiating its retail approach.
“Retail is highly competitive and ever evolving so we must keep adapting,” Marshall Warkentin, Staples president of US retail, said. “For us, that’s meant leaning into a services-led strategy.”
