Lenovo pips HP for top spot in PC market

Signs of softness in post-COVID market.

Lenovo has claimed top spot among PC makers in terms of shipments during the second quarter of 2021, according latest figures from industry research firm IDC.

HP and Dell came in second and third, whereas Apple and Acer were found to have a joint fourth place for the quarter.

The market continued to grow as a whole, although some slowdowns compared to early 2021 and 2020 may now be starting to emerge.

IDC reported that units shipments in the PC market (defined as ‘traditional’ devices including workstations, desktops and laptops) totalled 83.6 million in the second quarter of 2021.

Of those, Hong Kong-based Lenovo scored 23.9 per cent, or 14.9 per cent year-on-year, of those sales, trailed by HP, Dell, Apple and Acer at 22.2 per cent, 16.4 per cent, 7.4 per cent and 7.3 per cent respectively.

The top five vendors stayed more or less in same places when compared to IDC's 2020 figures, with the exception of Lenovo, which overtook HP to its new number one spot.

While the PC market grew by 13.2 per cent year-on-year, analysts believe the consumer PC-spending 'boom' is coming to an end as the ‘enterprise’ sector  takes over now businesses are starting to resume their operations post-COVID.
