Costco adds Hobart to expansion plans

Having posted a strong profit result, the US-based retailer has several new stores in the pipeline.

Warehouse retailer Costco has announced plans to open several new outlets in Australia following the release of financial results showing half a billion dollars in profit after tax last financial year.

Costco is reportedly eyeing Hobart for its first store in Tasmania, as the US retail giant ramps up its aggressive expansion across Australia.

The warehouse retailer is set to open two new locations next year in Victoria and Western Australia, while actively hunting for sites in North and South Sydney, Perth and Adelaide.

Tasmanian Greens senator Nick McKim last year vowed to spend $30 million to lure retailers like Aldi and Costco to the state as part of an election pitch.

“Coles and Woolworths have had it too good for too long and Tasmanians are paying the price,” he said.

In Melbourne’s southeast, a $74 million warehouse and mega fuel station is planned for Pakenham, set to open in 2027.

Western Australia will see its third Costco open in Alkimos in 2027, anchoring the $33 million Alkimos Central’s Home X Trade Hub.

As of early 2026, there are 15 Costco warehouses operating in Australia. The locations are distributed with four in Victoria, four in New South Wales, three in Queensland, two in Western Australia, and one each in South Australia and the ACT.
