Innovative office furniture firm reaches out to inmates

On-going WFH trend sees sales busting out

A Sydney-based office furniture company has weathered the worst of the pandemic by capitalising on the work-from-home trend and adopting an innovative manufacturing arrangement.

The Recess founders took several steps to ensure they stayed in business, including moving manufacturing to local correctional centres that had rehabilitation programs running for inmates who wanted to upskill themselves before their release.

Since launching in 2019, the Recess company says it has experienced 400 per cent year-on-year growth, with its WFH range has steadily increasing in sales at a rate of 100per cent month-on-month.

As the world went into lockdown, they launched their ‘headline’ product — an insulated office booth called The Nook.

Designed to allow team members (and family members) a separate, soundproofed space for focused working, The Nook is a fully ventilated, functional space equipped with a desk, whiteboard, power sockets and LED lighting.

The Nook is made from FSC-certified wood and insulated with recycled materials.

Recess also has plans to launch new products and services to improve the overall furniture purchasing process, including disposing of old office equipment sustainably when it delivers new gear.
