Major paper supplier in green spotlight

Global forestry, pulp and paper company Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) accused of continuing environmental failures.

Environmental Paper Network (EPN) and Jikalahari, an Indonesian network of non-governmental organisations, has released a detailed statement highlighting the "failure" of Indonesia’s APP to implement its green policies.

The criticism comes as APP, one of the world’s largest companies, has unveiled a new sustainability policy in Jakarta — essentially a rerun of promises it made a decade ago but, according to EPN, has largely failed to deliver on.

APP recently made a new annual $30m pledge to conserve and restore one million hectares of Indonesia’s rainforests over the next ten years.

This comes alongside the launch of the conglomerate’s new Regenesis app, designed to collate all of the group’s environmental commitments, actions and initiatives.

APP is the owner of the Sorbent Paper Company and the Australian partner Paper Force, which supplies Winc Australia/NZ with paper products.

Winc sells a variety of paper brands, including its own branded products, with features such as Carbon Neutrality, PEFC and FSC certification, and 100 per cent recycled options, which are manufactured by APP's subsidiary companies.

Investigations by environmental organisations have documented widespread deforestation, human rights abuses, and violations of environmental laws across APP.'s operations.

EPN said APP-linked operations emit greenhouse gases are at levels comparable to a developed nation, while its concessions are frequently sites of “catastrophic” peatland fires.

The environment group has urged corporate buyers and investors to avoid doing business with APP until full transparency is achieved and all environmental and social harms are fully addressed in line with plans agreed through free, prior, and informed consent.
